In a move that was warmly welcomed by Gurgaon residents, the police chief has announced that it is now legal to drive a car without a helmet. This was after a Gurgaon police team led by Sub-Inspector Vipin Kadian booked two people yesterday for this offence, not knowing that they were lawyers.
Veteran communist leader Brinda Karat briefly emerged from her South Delhi mansion to condemn the move. “This is blatant victimization of two-wheeler owners,” she said. “Why should only they bear the burden of police revenue?”
Her party is demanding a Universal Helmet Bill, making helmets compulsory for all commuters, including pedestrians, along with a Helmet Subsidy for the under-privileged.
In related news, it has now become mandatory for lawyers to wear large, pink badges which say ‘Lawyer’ at all times.
