In news that has relieved activists, West Bengal Supremo Mamata Banerjee has clarified that the arrest of the women who had come to discuss issues of women’s safety with her was done in order to keep them safe.
“I had promised to take West Bengal to new heights,” said Ms. Banerjee, “And now West Bengal is number one in crimes against women. However, this does mean that all women should ideally be kept in jail, where they will be under 24 hour police protection.”
Earlier, a senior officer of Kolkata Police denied that the women were arrested because of standing instructions to arrest any member of the voting public who tries to meet the Chief Minister.
“It was because of improper clothing,” he explained, “One of them was wearing a red blouse.”
